New in

SofaLayer stocks covers for three shapes: straight sofas, L-shaped sectionals and futon sofa beds. Around 120 references, in velvet, linen, jacquard, microfiber and waterproof fabric, from $38 to $124. Every listing gives the seat widths it fits, in inches and centimeters.

Why covers slide off

A cover that is simply thrown over a sofa has nothing holding it down, so it creeps every time someone sits. The covers here are cut to a shape and finished with elasticized hems that tuck under the base, plus foam grip strips pushed into the crevice between the seat and the back. That is the whole mechanism — there is no adhesive and nothing to attach to the frame.

Measuring, and why the brand label is useless

Two sofas both sold as three-seaters can differ by sixteen inches. Measure the width from the outer edge of one armrest to the outer edge of the other, across the widest point, then the depth from the back cushion to the front edge. Order by those numbers, not by what the manufacturer called it.

L-shaped sectionals

Measure the long side and the short side separately, and note which side the chaise is on as you face the sofa. Most sectional covers here are sold as two pieces that meet at the corner; the listing says so where that is the case.

Futon sofa beds

Measure it closed, in the sofa position. A futon cover has to fold with the frame, so it is cut longer than a fixed-sofa cover of the same seat width. A straight sofa cover put on a futon will bind when you drop the back.

Choosing a fabric

Velvet has the deepest pile and hides wear best, but it shows every pet hair. Linen stays matte and breathes, which matters on a sofa that gets used for hours at a time. Jacquard has its pattern woven in rather than printed, so it will not fade off the surface. Microfiber is the easiest to wash and the fastest to dry. The waterproof range has a backing that stops a spill before it reaches the upholstery underneath — that is the one to pick if the sofa is where the dog sleeps.

Washing

Cold machine wash, tumble dry low or hang. Skip the fabric softener on velvet and plush: it flattens the pile and it does not come back. Reshape the cover while it is still damp and put it straight back on the sofa — it dries into the right shape and you can skip the ironing entirely.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which size to order?
Measure your sofa across the widest point, armrest to armrest, and match that to the seat width on the listing. Sizes are given in inches and centimeters. If you fall between two sizes, take the larger one: the elastic takes up the slack, but a cover that is too small will not tuck.
Does the cover fit a recliner or a sofa bed?
Futon sofa bed covers are listed as such and are cut to fold with the frame. Covers for straight sofas and sectionals are not cut for reclining mechanisms.
How long does delivery take?
Orders leave within 1–2 business days, then 7–12 business days in transit. You get a tracking number by email when the parcel is handed over.
What does shipping cost?
